To: Norm Hahn, NMCB 62 Secretary. 8-10-2015, Today at 7:12 PM.I was requested to send this:
From: Katherine L RADM NAVFAC HQ Gregory, 00
Sir,
During some recent trips and talks with our retired community, Force Levesque and I have gotten some questions about the future of the Seabees and the future of the bases in Port Hueneme and Gulfport. We would appreciate your help in dispelling any and all rumors about any changes/cuts/closures -- THERE ARE NONE. While there has been some discussion of another round of BRAC in the news recently, there are NO PLANS (NONE) right now to close the base in Port Hueneme or Gulfport. There are also no plans to make further cuts to Seabee manning. In fact, in a recent budgeting meeting, senior Navy leaders acknowledged the importance of our Seabees tot the Navy's mission and stated that if savings were needed, cuts to the Seabees should not even be considered. We are in high demand and will remain so as the contingency construction agent of choice.
Recent events such as the POW Medal Ceremony in April and the CM3 Marvin Shields Remembrance Ceremony in June highlighted the courageous achievements of Seabees in the past, and this year's Sailor of the Year selections (two of the four are Seabees and a third is in the NCF), also demonstrate the contributions and recognition of current Seabees in the Navy. The Navy is very aware of and appreciative of the importance and value Seabees, Seabee units, and Seabee bases provide to our national defense. If you can also help dispel any rumors regarding additional cuts to Seabee forces and the closure of any bases, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for all that you do to continue to promulgate our great Seabee heritage.
Very sincerely,
Kate

I was in battalion 62 from 1972 - 1975 (Delta Company). Looking through the guest book pages I see a couple of names I remember but it's been so long ago. I often look for information about those I served with and once in a while find some information. It would be great to hear from any of you.Submitted by: Kristin (Erickson) Kraemer

I am writing on behalf of my late father, James D. erickson of Waconia, Minnesota. My Dad was in the nMCB 62 and toured in Vietnam from 1966 and I believe honorably discharged some time in 1972 and remained active status through '74. I am verifying dates currently with my mom theough his papers. My Dad passed away September 4, 2007 from a short battle with kidney cancer (77 days from diagnosis to death). I just recently have become inteigued about his naval background and those who surrounded him while on tour.Submitted by: Norm Hahn

Seabee Shipmates,It is great sadness that I report to you the untimely death of Captain John Elkins, CEC, USN, Retired.
I received this email from Mrs. Elkins 3-29-2015 and it is edited.
Hello Norm Hahn, We had made reservations at the Gulfport Hotel and had planned to attend the Reunion. (the May 2015 Gulfport All Seabee Reunion)
Sadly, on February 14 th, on a Mekong River Cruise, John Carroll Elkins died. We had not yet departed On the River Cruise and John died in Saigon. He had contracted Pneumonia on the long plane ride and went into Severe Ceptic Shock. Please let any other Seabees, (that might remember him) know. Thank you, Beth.
(the following edited portion is taken from Captain Elkins NMCB 62 website biography)
John C. Elkins enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1962, entered the Reserve Officer Candidate (ROC) program and was commissioned a CEC Officer. He held many positions including Commanding Officer of NMCB 62 from 1982 through 1984. He retired in August 1991 as Captain, CEC, USN.
He will be missed. We wish our Seabee Brother, Captain John Elkins, fair winds and following seas.
NMCB 62 Alumni Group Members can log in on this website link 21 to view his complete biography. Anyone wishing to make a memorial statement can send it to me in an email and I will put it into his biography or they can post it in this guest book.
Respectfully, Norm
