Museum Receives Grant from RI Council for the Humanities
spacer (1K)
The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities (RICH) held a press conference on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at the Rhode Island State House (photo) to announce its 2009 major grants. Among the grantees; Seabee Museum and Memorial Park, More than 80 guests attended the press conference. Featured speakers included Rhode Island Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts, Rhode Island Attorney General Patrick Lynch, and Peter Liotta the Executive Director of the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy at Salve Regina University.
Lt. Gov. Roberts praised RICH for its long history of serving the entire state said. "The humanities allow us to learn about and understand our history and our role in it," she said. "We need to protect the history and culture in this state."
The Museum will use the grant to create educational signage to exhibits. This will give the public a better understanding of the historical importance of the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park and its important role in Rhode Island history. The signage will also help tell the story of the founding of the Seabees to new generations.
The Rhode Island Council for the Humanities inspires and supports intellectual curiosity and imagination through lifelong learning by funding and developing programs that help Rhode Islanders better understand their world, their community, and themselves. For more information CLICK HERE.

Time is Running Out to Make the Dream a Reality
spacer (1K)
Just 10 months left to raise the funds to begin the long-awaited main museum building at the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park. The deadline is real. By the terms of the matching grant we have to begin construction by the end of 2009.

We are well on our way, but with the recent collapse of the economy donations have dropped significantly. The museum did receive a pledge from a local company to landscape the new building and our new partnership with the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities (see above) is a good sign. What is still needed is monetary support.

We know times are tough and budgets are being stretched, but we really need your support. Any donation, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated. You can donate at the Museum's online store or by printing a donation form and mailing it back to us along with your donation.

NMCB 62 Alumni Association Added
spacer (1K)
We recently added a link to the NMCB 62 Alumni Association to our LINKS page. It is a terrific web site and is bringing together former members of this Battalion.

Have you taken a look at this page? We received national recognition for this important feature of our web site. Our goal is to make this the premiere gateway for information about the Seabees. If you know of a good site we do link to, let us know.

Sites range from military web sites to individual labors of love. Hosting a web site takes work and dedication and, unfortunately, sometimes sites go "off the air." perhaps the web master is deceased or simply found the time and money more than he or she could devote. We salute all those who devote their time and energy to keeping the great Seabee heritage alive.

If you host a personal web site devoted to some aspect of Seabee history and find you are unable to maintain the site, let us know. We may be able to help.

While you are on the site, if you do find a "dead link" please let us know
.

A New Look for the Small Store
spacer (1K)
The Seabee Museum and Memorial Park Small Store is once again "open for business." Volunteers concluded the interior renovation. All the walls and ceilings were cleaned and repainted. The floors were scrubbed and polished. The most visible change are new commercial grade shelving. These were purchased at significant savings from a major home store that was going out of business.

Hats off the all the hard working volunteers. The store managers and staff are now open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday, 9:30 am - 2 pm. It won't we long till spring is here. Beginning on May 1 the store will go on summer hours and will be open daily.

As always, if you are in the area and the store hours do not fit your schedule, call the Store Managers, Audrey and Bob Schwab, at 401-294-7233 and they will be happy to open the store for you.

Just like the military issue version, this has a chin strap. It is great for keeping your cap on in the windiest weather.
